Learn At Lunch!
I stated in my New Years post one of the focusses for 2024 was to continue at Avenues Physio-Fitness to provide a ‘Centre of excellence’ for physiotherapy and rehabilitation for our community. With this in mind, I decided 2024 Avenues Physio-Fitness will be launching an initiative:
‘Learn at lunch’ which will encourage collaborative communication amongst our community of healthcare professionals within the Bay of Plenty.
I am proud to say that now that this has been a huge success as we were privileged to host Sonya (Anderson) Worth PT MHSC OCS FAAOMPT CIDN who is a NZ trained Physiotherapist but currently practises as clinical specialist in orthopaedic manual therapy at the university of Vermont, USA.
Sonya and I trained together 30 years ago and share the same passion for ensuring we use our excellence in anatomical, biomechanical and pathophysiological knowledge to optimise patient care within our treatment practice.
This month’s session was a collaboration aimed to upskill us with regard to not only the anatomy and physiology associated with dry needling and manual therapy, but also some wonderful practical applications of these techniques.
We know needling treatments can be used to target the neurological, lymphatic, vascular and the muscular systems. Central, local and distal needle points are key ensure the ideal neuromodulation response is achieved with dry needling. This reinforces previous lecture series I have attended such as Acupuncture and Dry Needling of the Lower leg Foot and Ankle, Tendinopathies and Calcifications by Leigh MacCutcheon (Bond University APA conference 2023).
Key take home messages for all that attended this months “Learn at Lunch” were:
- Ensuring “Bio” is included in the biopsychosocial model of healthcare practise
- Refresh your anatomy knowledge to enhance your clinical practise
- Ensure we work towards an evidence informed practise to enhance our optimal our physiotherapy care for all Kiritaki
If you are keen to join our next bi-monthly Learn at Lunch session, keep an eye out on our Instagram for announcements and timings. These sessions are typically on Tuesdays, at 12.45pm to allow people to join.
