Rankin Cup: Reflecting on a week of supporting adolescent hockey players through providing equity in Physiotherapy care.
Last week myself and the Avenues Physio-Fitness team were at the Rankin Cup Hockey Tournament in Tauranga, providing sideline sport specific physiotherapy services. I reflect on a wonderful week and also the past ten years of providing hockey specific physiotherapy for Tauranga Community and beyond.
Providing tournament physiotherapy has a profound impact not only on the athletes but also on the broader community. I am passionate about removing any inequity to health services in all levels of sport so all teams can hopefully be in their optimal physical condition and compete to their sporting potential.
Our team at Avenues Physio-Fitness ensured that every player, regardless of their background or financial situation, had access to our professional support. We eliminated disparities in injury care and recovery which allowed athletes to continue playing where possible.
As we were supporting players get back on the field either for that day or the next, it also allowed us time to educate adolescent athletes on preparation, injury management and recovery. I also provided many physiotherapy second opinions on injuries that had been troubling athletes
all year. This allows feedback and communication with other Physiotherapists around NZ to encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Working as a team and linking in with other health professionals was a highlight of the week, including welcoming Kate Savory back as an expert Hockey Physiotherapist, linking in with paramedics and doctor on site as well as some inspiring future physiotherapists which was great (thanks Charlotte and Ella!)
In summary, the pleasure of working with these young hockey players was immense, and the lessons learned extend far beyond the tournament.
It’s a reminder early intervention of injuries allows many players to get back on the field in a safe supported way.
With dedication and teamwork, we can make a significant impact on the lives of young athletes and help create a more equitable sporting world.
I would love to know your thoughts, what are some other ways we can strive for a collaborative and equitable level of healthcare for all?
